Bergkamp Doubles Facilities With $2 Million Investment
April 2009

Bergkamp has doubled its office and manufacturing facilities to better serve its customers, shorten lead times and increase staff capabilities within the growing pavement preservation industry. With the completion of this two-phase expansion and a more than $2 million total investment, the company has nearly 80,000 square feet of office and manufacturing space and further enhanced its customer-driven approach to new equipment, parts and service. The new, modern facilities provide the company with the resources to better meet demand and support its slurry seal, micro surfacing and pothole patching customers.
“This first-class office and manufacturing facility expansion helps us continue to meet the rising demand for pavement preservation as it is becoming recognized more as an economical solution for many local, state and federal governments,” said Scott Bergkamp, President of Bergkamp. “The investment of the new manufacturing facility and equipment helps us shorten lead times for parts and new equipment by streamlining the overall process. The entire expansion allows us to increase our engineering, manufacturing and sales staff as needed to maintain the personal service, support and quality that pavement preservation professionals require.”

Last year, Bergkamp completed the first phase of the expansion by essentially doubling its office space to 4,150 square feet. Synchronized with the expansion, the company renovated the existing office space and integrated it into the new contemporary design. It features a bright, open floor plan with individual work areas, high ceilings and a comfortable atmosphere for Bergkamp’s staff and visiting customers. The company now has the office space available to add staff as needed to meet the growth of the pavement preservation industry.
The second phase of the expansion involved the construction of an additional manufacturing facility—adjacent to the original building—increasing Bergkamp’s manufacturing space to 75,000 square feet. The original facility now contains expanded assembly, paint and parts operations that accelerate the current replacement parts system and help service customers more efficiently. The new facility houses fabrication and welding with $250,000 in new equipment, including a CNC lathe and a second CNC mill. Bergkamp can now run more operations with the same manpower and maintain its quality standard.
“Overall, our customers can expect the same personal approach and high-quality equipment they have gotten from Bergkamp in the past,” said Bergkamp. “This expansion provides us with the resources to continue to do the necessary things to shorten lead times, increase productivity, maintain quality and ensure that their needs are met now and in the future.”

Road Trip To Washington:
Bergkamp Stresses Preservation Funding With Congressmen
February 2009
Bergkamp recently took a trip to Washington D.C. to increase awareness of pavement preservation. Our goal is to educate Congress about pavement preservation to ensure that specific language is included in the next highway reauthorization bill. In the current bill that expires at the end of September, pavement preservation is eligible for federal funding, but awareness is low on all levels. We took a big first step in changing that by talking with Congressman Jerry Moran and his staff. Congressman Moran, the Kansas representative for the United States House of Representatives, is on the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and has a significant amount of authority regarding the language that will be included in the next highway reauthorization bill.
“It is time to get pavement preservation the recognition it deserves in Congress,” said Scott Bergkamp, President of Bergkamp Inc. “We are consistently looking for ways to help grow this industry. So we went to the people who have an impact on the language in the bill and have the potential to include pavement preservation in funding allocation. This may take some time, but I feel we have really gotten it kicked off and are heading in the right direction.”
We also spent some time with the staffs of Senator Pat Roberts and Senator Sam Brownback, educating them about the advantages of pavement preservation in terms of cost savings, safety and employment. The more educated these people are about pavement preservation, the better chance we have of increasing its importance on the minds of our government. Bergkamp will remain active with members of Congress, both in the Senate and the House of Representatives, to increase the security of our industry. Check back periodically as we will continue to educate you on the current status and if you can help.
And what is a trip without talking with customers about their pavement preservation needs and equipment. While in Washington D.C., Bergkamp attended the Transportation Research Board’s (TRB) 88th Annual Meeting. More than 10,000 government officials, manufacturers, students and other members of the transportation industry attended to learn what the TRB is doing and will accomplish in the future and what industry members can do to improve the current situation. We attended various presentations about pavement preservation and talked with many pavement professionals. All in all, it was a great chance to meet people and see what they look for in the equipment we manufacture and ways we can improve their business.
